Since 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society. Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist with at least 773 million young people and adults lacking basic literacy skills today.
International Literacy Day (ILD) 2021 will be celebrated under the theme “Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide”.
For young readers, picture books are an important part of learning how to read. Usually this type of format marks the first step in introducing a child to reading and is often the start of language development for many children. I taught in library classes picture books reading activity to promote literacy to young readers are boosting beginner-level vocabulary skills, introducing sentence structure and developing story analysis.
Puzzle solving has an inherent appeal to students and is an active way of learning or revising vocabulary. Students associate word puzzles with recreation and can be less daunting as review tools or even as a test. By substituting a visual-special relationship between meaning and definition, puzzles engage more students with the materials and deepen their mastery of the English lexis.
There are many types of word puzzles such as Double Puzzle, Word Search, Crossword and cryptogram etc. I have made a number of different unique word puzzles created on the same topic. So when we are studying a topic in English, say “Family and Friends”, I have made six different sets then split the class into six groups and give them each a unique puzzle to solve.
Library classes are useful to know the access of resources and other materials also improving of Information literacy skills to students and staff of the Vidyalaya.
